Printer Epson XP 420 Review & Specs
The Epson XP-420 ($50) is a bargain-priced multifunction inkjet printer that provides entry-level printing, scanning and copying. It does not have higher-end features like a duplexer for creating two-sided prints, an automatic document feeder (ADF) for copying or scanning multipage files, or another paper tray for photo paper. However, even when you’re OK with this tradeoff, you will still require patience, particularly when printing photographs.
Unlike a number of other multifunction versions, which place the input on the front of the unit, the XP-420’s input tray is on the rear of the chassis. It is vertical, gearing up from the device; then you lift it up and lean it back and then fall on your own paper. Lift the lid in addition to the device to get into the scanner.
To its left is a house button, and also to the best of it will be the remaining controls. These controllers aren’t standard buttons. Instead, the surface is a bit panel, in which a light tap on the corresponding icon makes your choice.
The remaining side of front panel comes with an SD memory-card slotmachine. After adding a memory card, then you may use the touch-panel buttons to select files or photos to print.
The XP-420 was somewhat slow to print our five-page text file. Epson’s printer averaged 5.9 pages per second, somewhat slower compared to the 7.1 ppm typical for inkjets we’ve tested.

Printing a photo on glossy paper, but requires plenty of patience. The XP-420 took almost 11 minutes to print a letter-size shiny photograph. The Canon MG3620 printed the exact same photo in only 3 minutes and 37 minutes, which was approximately the group average prior to the XP-420’s glacial outcome. The following slowest version, the Epson ET-2550, requires 5 minutes and 53 minutes. The comparison was not any less crude when creating 4-by-6-inch prints: The XP-420 took nearly 3 minutescompared to 43 minutes in the MG3620.
Copy and Scan Speed
Copying rates for your XP-420 were about average in many evaluations. The XP-420 made colour copies in 32.5 moments, which was just the typical for inkjet all-in-ones we have examined. Just the considerably more expensive Epson ET-2550 was quicker, at 10.9 minutes, whereas the Canon MG3620 required 17.4 moments to create exactly the identical copy.
Scanning a colour photo at 600 dpi into JPEG format required 1:27, 3 minutes slower than the group average. The Canon MG3620 was considerably faster in this scan evaluation, taking just 39.4 minutes. The Canon MG3620 is your fastest inkjet model analyzed so far, finishing the exact same job in 8.9 minutes.
The XP-420 delivered high-quality prints, emphasized by appealing graphics. Text appeared quite eloquent, and images printed with rich colour and a fantastic quantity of detail. The XP-420 made duplicates onto a level with other examined inkjets; text and images dropped a bit sharpness, but worth tended to be true. In comparison with Canon’s similarly priced MG3620, the Epson version did a much better job of keeping midtone adjustments; the MG3620 tended to flip them into too dark shadows.
Photo: EpsonScan quality was quite high, and also on a level with other inkjet all-in-ones. The XP-420 correctly reproduced the colours and fine details in photos, retaining information in shadow regions.
